Important note: at the time this article was written, it was believed that textures might also explain the formation of galaxies. That was decisively disproven in the work of Pen, Seljak and Turok, `Power spectra in global defect theories of cosmic structure formation,'' Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 1611 (1997). However, the formation of textures at a lower energy scale, such as is required by the texture explanation for the spot, is perfectly compatible with other observational limits.
