The G K Batchelor Memorial Fund and the D G Crighton Memorial Fund

These funds were established in 2000. The George Batchelor Memorial Fund supports the G. K. Batchelor Lectureship. The David Crighton Memorial Fund supports the David Crighton Fellowship Scheme.

The G. K. Batchelor Lectureship provides for a one-week visit each year by an authority in some branch of fluid mechanics, usually from overseas, to present a keynote fluid mechanics seminar and to interact with members of the Department, particularly with graduate students, during the visit. This Lectureship was initiated in 1995 by George himself, who made a substantial personal donation, and is now financed by the G. K. Batchelor Memorial Fund established in 2000, to which many have contributed. However, we need to raise a further £25k in order to secure in permanence the future of this Lectureship.

The David Crighton Fellowship scheme provides for three-month visits to DAMTP of young researchers (from overseas or from elsewhere in the UK), to engage in collaborative research with members of the Department; such Fellowships can attract young scientists of outstanding merit to Cambridge. There is also the possibility for young DAMTP researchers to make visits elsewhere. This scheme, with typically four Fellowships each year, has proved itself over the last seven years, and lasting collaborations have emerged. Each Fellowship, or a corresponding summer studentship to allow undergraduates to experience fluid dynamics in DAMTP, requires an endowment of £60k. New Fellowships or studentships could, of course, be named as the donor wished.
