Help on Gnome
Gnome comes with its own help pages. Access them via the System menu. System -> Help.My panel icons have changed to question marks
If your panel icons (or the panel itself) is misbehaving try using the resetgnomepanel command. If that fails please contact a departmental computer officer by emailing help. At worst things may need to be reset to the system defaults (which may have slightly changed since your account was created).Change the Applications menu
To change the Applications menu use the program called alacarte, this allows you to reorder the programs and hide/show an item. This program lives at /usr/bin/alacarte.GNOME is in a strange state - when I select an item nothing comes up
Gnome sometimes get into this state after a powercut if it has left a lock file behind and is getting confused.
Remove the lock files e.g.:rm ~/.gconfd/lock/*
Make sure that their are no gnome processes called gconfd belonging to you on the computer.GNOME has hung all I can see is the background screen.
Try reseting your gnome session.mv .gnome2/session .gnome2/session.backup
