Monitor Resolution
Health and Safety
For safe working you need to ensure that the monitor on your desk is running at the correct resolution for you. When we set up your computer we have no idea what resolution suits you. Therefore if you find that the display on your monitor is too big or small, or it flickers or is difficult to read, please email help@damtp explaining the problem, the name of the computer the monitor is attached to and its location and where its a case of increase or decreasing the resolution which you would prefer.
To find out what resolution your computer is currently running at open a terminal or xterm window and run the command
xdpyinfo | grep dimension
To test different resoltions you can use
control-alt-+ and
control-alt--
(Using the +/- keys on the numerical keypad.)
to cycle through the resolutions your monitor is capable of running at. This does not lead to a very neat desktop, for example the clock will be out of place, but it gives you an idea if you are happy with the resolution change.
If you are having problems with a shared computer in a public area then unfortunely we cannot change the resolution unless we receive a number of requests to change the resolution of that monitor from different users who use that computer. However you can temporarily change the resolution while you are logged in by using the commands above.
Most monitors have a button which can be used to adjust there settings. With the iiyama monitors used in the deparment this is the "menu" button. This can be used for positioning the screen you see correctly on the monitor.
