FVWM xterm pictures and colours

Changing the xterm colours

We have being using the current xterm colours for over 11 years now. However if you want to break the tradition read on.

The default colours are

  background navyblue
  foreground white
  cursor lightish-blue

If (say) you want to change these to have a white background, black foreground and black cursor then you would add the following lines into your .Xresources file. (Or create a .Xresources file with the appropiate lines from below if you don't have one)

XTerm*vt100*background: white
XTerm*vt100*cursorColor: black
XTerm*vt100*foreground: black

These changes will take effect next time you log in. To test them without logging out run the command.

	xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources

and then open a new xterm window.

For the list of permitted colours check the file /usr/lib/X11/rgb.txt or run the command showrgb

Changing the delete key to delete to the right of the cursor

To configure the delete key (Delete key normally located to the right of the back-space key next to Home, End and Insert) to delete characters to the right of the cursor add this to your .Xresources file:

XTerm*vt100.deleteIsDEL: off

How to change the background to a picture

Use the xsetbg program, which will take many different file formats (.jpg, .gif etc),

If you want the background to be loaded each time you log in, add the xsetbg or xpmroot command to a file called .xsession_extra which will be run after you log in each time. See the xsetup web page for more details.

Other FVWM settings you can change

To see which other xterm and other X settings you can change check the file /usr/damtp/defaults/.Xresources and read about the default X configuration.
