Editors

Before you start programming, or writing documents or using latex you need to learn how to use a unix editor. You can use a search engine like google to look for tutorials on how to use the editors listed below.

Different editors can be quite different. People can get very touchy over which editor is best. Therefore the editors below are in alphabetical order. You may like to try a few of them before deciding which one(s) to use.

Editors for writing text files.

• emacs (supported)
• gedit (unsupported)
• kate (unsupported)
• pico (supported)
• vim (and vi) (supported)

To edit non-plain text files, maybe a file ending in .doc or .xls refer to the filetypes table.

If you run the KDE or Gnome desktop you may find additional editors installed.
