Transferring your email to Hermes

This applies only to damtp accounts set up before September 2005.

Advantages of moving your email to Hermes

The Hermes email system is quicker and has more available disk space for storing your email.

Compare a picture of the damtp email server with those of Hermes.

With Hermes email you can

  • Keep your damtp email address and continue to send mail from your damtp email address. You do not need to resubscribe to mailing lists.
  • Send email via the wireless network in the central core (service coming soon)
  • Continue to use the email program you currently use for reading and sending email.
  • Start off with a quota of 1GB just for your email, this can be increased for long term members of the university
  • Save DAMTP staff time. The computing service have two full time people to work on email related matters.
  • Use a web based interface for setting up vacation messages, redirections and filters. If you prefer to write your own .forward files you can.
  • Send email from your mail program when you are away at conferences without having to change your settings.

Note:

  • Hermes is not webmail. Webmail is a tool used for accessing email, Hermes is the system email is physically kept on.
  • Hermes is completly seperate from Raven.
  • Hermes allows POP access.

Howto move your email to Hermes

  1. Obtain a Hermes account (email the damtp helpdesk). If you already have a Hermes account make sure it is not redirecting your Hermes email to damtp. Otherwise an email loop will ensure. To see if you already have a Hermes account run
    	finger username@hermes.ac.uk
    
  2. If your damtp email, including inbox contains more than 1GB of email then you'll need a Hermes quota increase, either fill in the Hermes quota increase form explaining that you are transferring your email from damtp to Hermes. Or alternatively contact help@damtp and we will arrange the increase on your behalf.
  3. Log into either model.damtp.cam.ac.uk or par.damtp.cam.ac.uk and run the command
    	/usr/local/2hermes/bin/2hermes
    
    This program will set up a local forwarding and transfer your email files.
  4. If you don't want to transfer all your email folders, check these instructions for how to not transfer some folders.
  5. If you need any help with this procedure please contact help@damtp.
  6. Email help and let us know you have transferred your email to hermes so we can set up a system forwarding to speed up your email delivery.
  7. Reconfigure your email program.    

Footnotes

  • If you had spam filtering set in DAMTP, set it on Hermes via the web interface. Go to webmail.hermes.cam.ac.uk. Select Manage -> Junk Email -> fill in the asked for values.
  • If you wish to change your Hermes password go to webmail.hermes.cam.ac.uk. Select Manage -> Change Password -> fill in the asked for values.
  • If you wish to change to set up a vacation message go to webmail.hermes.cam.ac.uk. Select Manage -> Vacation -> fill in the asked for values.
  • There are many other options under "manage".
