How to export a Hermes Address Book ready to import into Thunderbird

The following steps describe how to copy your address books from Hermes into Thunderbird. If you have several address books, treat each one as a separate job and follow the information below for each book.

  1. The first job to do is to log into Hermes webmail. Once logged in, you need to open the Address Book by clicking on the 'Addressbook' icon at the top of the screen

  2. Once the Address Book is opened, you then need to 'Transfer' it. To do this, click on the word 'Transfer' to the right of the window

  3. In the next window, you need to select the 'Export CSV (Outlook) addressbook' text.

  4. You'll then be asked where and what name to save the CSV file. Choose a location for the file, N:\mail will be a good place, give it a name, herm_address would do and save it.

  5. That now completes the export from Hermes. The next stage is to import the addresses into Thunderbird. Open Thunderbird (and type in your password if required). You then need to open the Address book manager so you can import your addresses. To do this, click on the Address Book icon at the top of the Thunderbird window

  6. A new Window will appear, this is your address book manager for Thunderbird. You now need to import the file you just made in Hermes. To do this, from the Tools menu, choose Import.

  7. This now starts a wizard that will guide you though the import process. The first parts asks you what you want to import. By default the 'Address Books' option will be selected, that's what we want, press the Next button.

  8. On the next part of the wizard, select the 'Text File (LDIF, .tab, .csv, .txt). Press Next.

  9. You will then be asked to provide a file to import. Navigate to your N:\mail folder and select the file you created in Mulberry (in our case herm_address). You might need to pull down the 'Files of Type' menu to show 'All Files'. Press Open once selected.

  10. You'll then get asked what fields of the address book do you want to import and where. By default the 'Address Book fields' don't tie up correctly with the 'Record data to import' columns. You need to move the 'Address Book fields' up or down to match the image below. To move a field, single left click a field and then press either the Move Up or Move Down button. You'll see the field change position. Don't worry about the fact the a little tick disappears, we'll come back to them in a minute. Make sure the aligning fields are Nickname = Name. Display Name = Nickname and Primary Email = E-mail Address. Lastly, make sure all the tick boxes down the left hand side of this window are ticked. Once done, press the OK button.

  11. The wizard will then import the addresses. A small status bar will move across the screen as it imports the address's.

  12. Once the import has completed, you will be asked to press the Finish button.

  13. You should now see your imported address book within Thunderbirds address book manager. It will be listed on the left of the screen along with the two default address books, Personal Address Book and Collected Address's (the address book below also shows two LDAP address books)

  14. To make sure your address book has imported correctly, compose a new email and try entering the first few letters of an address or name of someone you know is in your imported address book. Thunderbird should popup what it thinks you want to use using information from your import. To choose one of the options, either click on it or use your arrow keys to select one and press Enter to use it.
