What To Backup Before Your Pc Is Reinstalled
Although all work that is stored on you N:\ drive is backed up, nothing that is stored on your local pc, the C:\ drive is. This means that if you store your large photo's or Word documents on the C:\ drive and your machine develops a hardware fault that results in your local hard disk being destroyed or the pc is re installed while you're away for some reason , you've lost all your pictures/documents. There are a few options available to you to prevent this, one being that you ask for your quota to be increased on your N:\ drive. If this is not possible, you'll need to get in the habit of doing a bit of 'house keeping' and backup old files off you N:\ drive onto cd's or dvd's. Another option if you are reguarlly using these large files that you can't store on your N:\ drive of cd/dvd's is to use scratch space on the unix network.
Knowing what to backup is sometimes the hardest part of backing up. Once you know what to store on cd/dvd's, the backup process is easy. The following list should help identify what you may want to save from possible disaster;
- Any Word templates you have made
- Custom dictionaries
- Your internet bookmarks/favorites
- Logo's or crests
- Personal data files
- Desktop pictures
- Tex/LaTeX templates
Once you've started doing regular 'house keeping', you'll find it's easier than you initially thought and reassuring knowing that if anything goes should wrong, you've got your own copy of your important data
