Setting up a PWF connection

The following info will explain what to do when a DAMTP Windows pc is connected to both the 'normal' damtp network and the PWF network. To do this, the pc will need to have two network cards installed.

Computer Adminitrators, set the Network Connection settings as below;)

  • Normal Network NIC
    Client for Netware
    Client for Microsoft
File and Printer sharing for MS Network
    NWLink NetBIOS
    TCP/IP Internet

  • PWF Network NIC
    Client Services for Netware
    Client for Microsoft
File and Printer sharing for MS Network
    NWLink NetBIOS
    NWLink IPX/SPX Netbios

When you install the Netware driver, it also adds another config tool to the Control Panel. This is called CSNW

You need to change a setting in this tool. Open it, you should see a window appear like the following;

You need in fill in the 'Tree' and 'Context' fields. Tree = granta, Context = .aliases (note the dot before the word aliases!)

Press OK once the change has been made. You'll then be told that the settings won't take effect until you log back in again. Log out and in again. When you log in, you'll be asked for your PWF password

You will now be able to browse the PWF network. One method of doing this is to open Windows Explorer and expand the 'My Network Places' branch. Eventually you'll see a list of PWF trees and branches. Depending on the permissions you account has got will determine what you can and can not see.

How to map your PWF home directory

If you want to assign a drive letter to your PWF home dir (you can use this same method if you want to map say \\pwf-shared\UX), use Windows Explorer to find your directory. These are arranged in alphabetic order as \\pwf-home1 or \\pwf-home2 etc. Within each directory will be sub directories that contain user account A to C for example. Once you've found your directory, right click on it and select Map Network Drive from the menu

Choose thee letter you'd like to use and press Finish

From now on you can access this PWF directory by simply clicking on the pre-assigned drive letter, Z in this example
