Are There Any Public Windows Pcs in DAMTP?
Yes, there are two public windows computers in damtp for use by damtp members. You need to have a windows account set up before you can use either of these two machines, see the faq page for more information on how to apply for one.
One of these pc's (called common) can be found in pavilion G, first floor, centre bench. It has a scanner and a colour inkjet printer attached to it. The second pc (called piece) is located in pavilion B, second floor, to the side of the common room area south end.
These two machines differ from the 'standard' Windows install found on department administration Windows 2XP pc's in a number of ways, mainly, they have more software installed.
You can read and write to your Unix files by looking in the N:\ drive. This drive is mapped automatically at logon, try to store all your work on the N:\ drive as none of the local disk gets backed up.
The software installed allows for more multimedia work to be done. Programs like:
-
Adobe Acrobat Pr
-
Paint Shop Pro
-
Corel Draw
-
Corel Paint
-
WinDVD Player
-
RealPlayer One
Some Math application are installed to help create Math based documents:
-
MathType 5.2
-
MikTeX (part of WeTeX package)
-
Yap (part of WeTeX package)
-
GSView
File manipulation programs: - ZipCentral
- Cpio
Internet based software:
-
WinSCP
-
Cygwin
-
PuTTY
Software Support
Because of the large selection of software on these machines, CO support might be limited for some applications. This does mean that if you have a problem, please be patient as it may take a little time for us to understand the problem before finding the solution. For self diagnosis, first look at the software manufacturer's web site. Most programs have a direct link to this from the Help menu in their program. Others might need looking for, the best facility to use for this is www.google.com
ยง By the term public, we mean a non-personal pc, one that can be accessed by any damtp member.
