What are the private, NOBACKUP etc directories doing in my N: drive?

When your new Unix home directory is setup, you are given five directories/folders all for different uses. They are:

  • mail
  • mulberry
  • private
  • public
  • shared

The mail folder is where your emails are stored. Your sent-mail folder is stored in here along with any other folders you create for filtering/filing. Your INBOX isn't stored in your mail folder - this is on the email server. The mail folder is backed up overnight.

The mulberry folder stores your preferences.mbp file and your address books for the email reading program called Mulberry. This too is backed up.
NOTE: If you manually create this folder, you need to chmod ¥ it to 700 (chmod 700 ~username/mulberry)

The private folder is what it says, it's a folder that is private to you only; no-one else can read any files or directories within it. All the other folders listed on this page are readable by anyone else so store your confidential files in \private. It gets backed up, but is only readable by you.
NOTE: If you manually create this folder, you need to chmod ¥ it to 700 (chmod 700 ~username/private)

The public folder is used for your web pages. Put your htm or html files in here along with any pictures (*.gif and *.jpg only). Be warned, anything that goes in this directory can be scanned by search engines and added to their list of world wide web pages. If you create a web page all about your pet dog called jessie, after a few months the page will be picked up by a search engine and anyone who searches for the word jessie will find your web page. If you store documents, zip files, txt files, anything, and if someone knows the address of that file, they can download it.
NOTE: If you manually create this folder, you need to chmod ¥ it to 755 (chmod 755 ~username/public)

The shared folder is used to share files with other people within your group. If you want to store anything that other people might want to read (not write), then put them in here.
NOTE: If you manually create this folder, you need to chmod ¥ it to 750 (chmod 750 ~username/mulberry)

You can also create another directory called NOBACKUP (all upper case). Anything that is put in here doesn't get backed up unlike all the above directories. If you have large files or pictures that you downloaded off the web, they don't need backing up, taking up valuable storage space and if you do lose them, you can always download them again and put them in the NOBACKUP directory.

¥ = chmod is a unix command to change the permission on who can read, write or execute a file or directory. You need to type this on a unix command line, this can be done by using the Exceed program. To learn more about the chmod command, in an Exceed window, type man chmod.
