Starting, Minimizing and Closing Exceed 7

The Red Hat 8.0 Linux computers don't include by default xdm, used in previous versions of Red Hat to provide a method for Exceed to connect to Unix computers. As a result of it not being there anymore, a new version of starting Exceed had to be used.

The new method limits slightly the number of Unix computers a user can connect to but it also makes life easier for the user who connects to the same machine every day. From the Start menu -> Programs -> Exceed, a list can be seen of all the machines that accept Exceed clients. Currently (November 2003) this is:

  • Aswan
  • Derwent
  • Hoover
  • Ilisu
  • Kariba
  • Kielder
  • Merlin
  • Narmada
  • Nipah
  • Tucurui

There is another option on the list, 'Specify username, machine & window manager', this is where you can specify the CRSid (username), the Unix machine name and the type of window manager you want to use. By default, fvwm is used as the normal window manager, the Red Hat 8.0 computers also have Gnome and Kde installed.

To start Exceed, the easiest way is to select a computer from the list that you want to connect to, and click on its name.

1

You then get prompted for your Unix password, not the password you logged into your Windows computer with. Your CRSid (username) that you logged into the computer with is passed to the startup script so if you are not the person who logged into the Windows computer, you need to start Exceed using the 'Specify username, machine & window manager' method (see below).

2

Once you've typed in your password, an ssh connection is established between the local pc and the Unix computer you want to connect to. After a few seconds, an Exceed window will appear and away you go.

Using the 'Specify username, machine & window manager' method

If you want to specify the username, machine name and window manager, you need to use the 'Specify username, machine & window manager' option from the Start menu. A window will appear asking for a CRSid, the remote machine name and either the default (fvwm) window manager, Gnome or Kde.

3

Fill in the relevant fields and press return when finished. After a short time, a window will appear asking you for the password for the CRSid you just typed in. Enter it and wait for Exceed to load. This method of starting Exceed is useful if you want to work with Unix but you don't want to log into a Windows pc as you.

Minimizing And Closing Exceed

To Minimize Exceed, press the Alt and the Space keys together. A small menu will appear in the top left hand corner of your screen.

4

Pressing n or clicking Minimize will minimize the Exceed window. This method can be used for any Windows program, useful when the three buttons usually found on the top right of each window are missing.

To close Exceed, you use the same Alt + Space key sequence as above but this time, instead of pressing n to minimize, press c to close..
