Glossary of Frequently Used DAMTP Computing Terms

Sometimes emails from "the departmental computing helpdesk" contain acronmys and other difficult to understand phases. This is not a deliberate attempt to confuse.

This is a list of some of the more common words and phases. Please email itweb@damtp.ac.uk with any other words or phases used that confuse you and they will be added here.

  • CITC: Committee of some computer officers and users, which decides on what major services get implemented and what direction the department should move in computer-wise.
  • Console: The computer's console is the monitor connected to the computer. While you are using this, other people can log into the computer remotely, but cannot log directly into the computer. Leaving public computers console's locked for long periods of time, is annoying for other users of them.

  • Data space: Dedicated disks which are made available for data/file storage.

  • fvwm: One of the X desktops used on damtp computers

  • Gnome: The default Xwindows desktop manager on the department's Scientific Linux computers.

  • KDE: One of the Xwindows desktop managers available on the department's Scientific Linux Computers.

  • Laptop Network: Laptops and other user controlled machines are plugged into a different network.
  • Loginname: Name you use to log into damtp, used interchangably with username and crsid.

  • Network port: The socket you plug your computer's network cable into, when we ask for the network port number we mean the alpha-numberical string over the actual socket which you will be using.

  • OS: Operating System; most people are using one of unix, windows, or macos.

  • Prayer: The official name for webmail.
  • Public Computer: A computer, usually unix, which anyone with a damtp unix account can log into remotely. Public Computers are not neccesarily in public areas.

  • quota: We use a quota system on home directories. To check how close you are to your limit use quota
  • raid server: A name for the computer which holds the home directories.
  • Scratch space: Usually part of the system disk which is not used for system files and is made available for data/file storage.
  • ssh: The protocol you use to connect to damtp computer from outside the department, ssh encrypts what you type over the network. Remember that damtp does not allow incoming telnet connections.

  • UCS: University Computing Service
  • Username: Name you use to log into damtp, used interchanably with login, loginname and crsid.

  • Wallport Number: The alpha-numberical string over the network port you wish to plug your laptop/computer into eg G/115.
  • Window Manager: A program that defines the look of the title-bar and other window decorations. It also provides ways to move, close and resize windows and start new programs.

  • X-Cam-Score: The spam score your email has achieved, measured by a string of s's eg ssssssss, the more s's the more likely it is to be spam, visible by looking at the header of the email message in question.
