If firefox stops offering you an application name to use to open a file, for example you select a pdf file and the "open with" box that firefox displays does not say acroread (or pdf or whatever you may have set it to), instead that field is blank. Then check /tmp (type in "df -k /tmp") on the computer you started firefox from. If /tmp is 100% full or close to it, remove some files, or email help@damtp to remove some for you. Then the problem should go away.
