How to print from your laptop

You must be logged into the laptop network to print and to configure your system for printing. If you try to print and are not authenticated your document will not print and you cannot receive a message telling you so.

How to configure your computer to access the departmental printers via the laptop server is described on the laptop server printing section.

Windows

If you are running Vista, the instructions are similiar to windows XP; instead of using Start-Run, click the windows icon in the bottom left hand corner of the screen (where the Start button used to be). Then in the "Start Search" box type in the address of the laptop server \\lapserv.maths.cam.ac.uk and press enter. A list of printers will appear, double click the one you want. Select "Install driver" when the warning box appears. You may be asked for permission to continue. Select continue.

MacOSX

If you are running an earlier version, the instructions are similiar. Note that currently the 10.5 images are actually from a 10.4 machine but are pretty similar (after you have turned browsing on with the cupsctl command in a terminal).

UNIX/Linux

Instructions for Ubuntu 8.04
Instructions for Ubuntu 7.10
Instructions for Ubuntu 7.04
Fedora 7 (Fedora 8 should be very similar)
For other linux users the main points are to use the CUPS printer system (most systems should come with it installed and make sure that the setting like Detect LAN Printers is turned on.

Here is the DAMTP List of Printers: their location, capabilities, status and queued jobs (only visible from inside the site). Note that you can search for subsets of printers in there, e.g. searching for pavg will show all printers in with that string in their information.
