1717) 30/10/12 Reminder: Linux Computers Reboot Tomorrow [REBOOT]
SUMMARY: Reminder: The linux computers will be rebooting in the early hours of Wednesday 31 October to apply a kernel security update. Please save your work before you go home.
DETAILS: The department's linux computers run update tasks nightly. When a reboot is needed we schedule it where possible for early on a Wednesday morning. We put out a message of the day about this impending reboot on the 19th of October.
Some computers will have rebooted between when we scheduled the reboot and tonight. Your computer needs a reboot if your computer's message of the day (motd) contains the string:
Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-308.13.1.el5
You computer does not need a reboot if the motd contains the string:
Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-308.16.1.el5
The message of the day is displayed whenever you open a terminal or xterm window on one of the unix computers. You can also view it with the command
cat /etc/motd
New comers to the department may not know of the message of the day system or mailing lists. Please pass this message on to them.
