Advantages of New Printing System (CUPS)

In September 2006 DAMTP switched to using a system called CUPS for printing. Some of the advantages of CUPS to you are:

  • The new system will allow you to select more features of the printer, and have more control over which features you use. For example if the printer you are using offers stapling, then you can choose to turn this feature on or off.
  • Windows users accessing the printers via Samba will notice that the windows system automatically picks up all the features of the printer, without any of them needing to be setup by hand
  • If you have a printer at home and are running linux, you are likely to be using the same CUPS system.

  • On the linux system there are GUI tools such as kprinter which will allow you run print operations, eg cancel a print job via a pop up window and not bother with having to open a terminal/xterm.
  • People using the laptop network will be able to cancel their own printer jobs
  • We can update to a new version of Openoffice, which needs CUPS
