Setting my UNIX/Linux/Mac OS X Default Printer
Under UNIX/Linux
To set a default printer for use with the damtp unix system you need to edit your ~/.env_extra file.
Remove the "#" sign at the start of the line
#export PRINTER=printer-name
and replace printer-name with the printer you would like to use as your default printer. You can check the printer closest to you by going to
Next time you log in all applications should pick up your default printer.
If you do not have a ~/.env_extra file in your homedirectory (if your account was created prior to April 2004) then you will need to create one and insert the line below into it
export PRINTER=printer-name
This is regardless of what shell you use.
Prior to mid December 2003 we recommended that people add the printer name into their ~/.bashrc or ~/.cshrc depending on their shell. It is okay to leave the printer name in your ~/.bashrc (or ~/.cshrc) file, but if you have a different printer in your ~/.bashrc or ~/.cshrc file than in your ~/.env_extra file than the one in your ~/.bashrc (or ~/.cshrc) file will be the printer that some applications see.
If your are using a C-shell, edit you ~/.cshrc file to add
set ENVEXTRA="${HOME}/.env_extra"
if (-f $ENVEXTRA && -x /opt/damtp/bin-share/cshenv.pl ) then
eval `/opt/damtp/bin-share/cshenv.pl $ENVEXTRA`
endif
and remove any lines containing
setenv PRINTER
Under Mac OS X
Open System Preferences and select Print and Fax In the list of printers deselect the old printer names. Make sure none of these names is the value for Selected Printer in Print Dialog.
