X forwarding

To configure your ssh client to use X forwarding, or to be able to run X applications through your ssh connection.

  • From Windows using Putty
    • In the left-hand pane of putty, click on the "+" sign to the left of Connection
    • Then the "+"sign before SSH
    • Next click on Tunnels
    • Make sure Enable X11 forwarding is checked
You will also need to have an X server, for example exceed, running on your windows computer.
  • On Unix, Linux and MacOSX (with the command ssh), you may need to use ssh -X, to enable X forwarding. Newer versions of openssh changed the meaning of -X so with those you may need to use -Y instead.
