Computer Accounts and Services
As a member of DAMTP or long term visitor you are entitled to the following (services marked with a * are not given to everyone by default). Some of the services are provided by the department and others by the University Computing Service - these services are marked by (ucs) if you have a problem with one of these you contact the ucs helpdesk. For problems with the damtp system please contact the appropiate damtp helpline.
If you have recently joined DAMTP, please check you have access to all the default services.
A damtp unix and windows account. Used for access to the departmental unix (and linux) computers, and macOSX computers, windows computers and the windows terminal server.
A Hermes Email account. You will receive an email address in the form crsid
@ hermes.ac.uk (ucs)A damtp email address. Usually in the form of A.Surname
@ damtp.ac.uk, unless you specified a different format when you applied for your damtp account, which forwards to your Hermes email address. If you want to advertise this email address to people you need to set it as your "From" and/or "Reply To" email address, otherwise the email program you use may default to using username@ cam.ac.uk for your email addressA Raven Account. Raven is used to authenticate you to websites. In DAMTP we also use Raven to authenticate you to the laptop network. (ucs)
Access to the CMS laptop network. Use the laptop network for laptops and other computers not under departmental control.
If you have a Raven account, use that to access the laptop network. If you are a short term visitor your group secretary will give you a ticket.
An entry in the University Directory. This service is used by university members to access contact information about other members. Many email programs, including the ones we officially support in damtp, use it to search for Cambridge email addresses.
You should check that the correct data is recorded for you, and decide which data you are happy for other people in the university to be able to view. Only members of the university can use this service. (ucs)

An @cam email address in the form crsid
@ cam.ac.uk, you can choose where you would like to redirect your @cam email to and whether or not to make to make it available in the online email directory (accessible via searching by people outside the university). (ucs)An @cam email address in the form crsid

@ damtp.ac.uk if any of your information is incorrect.* A departmental windows account The department has a couple of public computers running windows XP. If you have a laptop running windows having a windows account allows you view your damtp homedirectory on your laptop via samba. Apply via the damtp online application form.
* Homepage, personal webspace.
* A PWF account. The computers in GLO4, the PartIII room (pavilion B lower ground floor) and the Moore Library are part of the public workstation facility. The ones in GL04 and the part III area are dual boot windows XP and linux, priority is given to students in the use of these computers during full term. (ucs)
While your initial password for some accounts may be identical, changing the password on one system does not change it for the others.
