International Workshop on the
Physics of Compressible
19-23 July 2004
This workshop focuses on fundamental aspects of turbulent mixing in flows subject to destabilising acceleration in both compressible and incompressible fluids. Specific topics include (but are not limited to):
à Rayleigh-Taylor instability
à Richtmyer-Meshkov instability
à Mixing layers
à Coherent structures
à Experimental, numerical and theoretical studies
à Novel numerical and experimental techniques
à Direct numerical simulation, large-eddy simulation and turbulence models
à Relating 2D and 3D models and flows
Papers are invited, in English, for both oral and poster presentations during the Workshop.
Decision on whether or not a paper is accepted for the
workshop will be made on the basis of a single page abstract which should be
Abstracts are limited to a single page of size 150´220 at 11 point. Abstracts should be prepared using either Word or LaTeX using the templates available from the conference web site (Word, LaTeX). Please adhere to the requested style and length limit. More complete details are available in html and pdf formats on the conference web site. While the organisers will take all reasonable care in processing the abstracts, they cannot be held responsible for any problems that may arise in reproducing the abstracts.
Abstracts should be submitted by e-mail to email@example.com, with “IWPCTM9 Abstract - oral” or “IWPCTM9 Abstract - poster” in the subject line. Abstracts should adhere to the format outlined below and may be submitted either as plain text within the body of the e-mail, or as an attached file. Where figures are included, the author must also submit a .pdf copy of the abstract, and all necessary files (source, figures and .pdf) should be combined into a single .zip file. The names of any attached files should begin with the name of the lead author.
Authors will be notified as to whether their abstract(s) is(are) accepted in February 2004. Accepted abstracts will be posted on the conference web site and a book of abstracts will be provided to all participants at the start of the conference.
The organisers intend to produce proceedings for the Workshop in either CD-Rom or DVD-Rom format. All authors presenting papers (oral and poster) at the Workshop will be invited to submit material for inclusion in the proceedings. Such submissions will be based on papers formatted as .pdf files, but may optionally include other material (e.g. mpeg movies) in industry standard formats. The deadline for submission of these contributions will be in September 2004, and further instructions to authors will be provided in due course.
Scientific sessions will run from Monday morning until lunchtime Friday. The oral presentations will be given in a tiered lecture theatre, equipped with all the necessary projection equipment, and posters will be displayed in two adjoining rooms to allow viewing during the breaks, as well as in dedicated poster sessions. The use of laptops is encouraged, and a PC with CD drive will also be available.
Time will be allotted within the programme for discussion sessions, and the atmospheric college bar will be open in the evenings for informal discussions.
We hope to keep Wednesday afternoon free so that you may

The registration fee and cost of accommodation/meals are not
yet finalised. Preliminary figures suggest the conference fee, including a
reception on the Sunday, lunches and the conference dinner, is likely to be in
the region of £350 per person, with a reduction for students. Part of this fee
will contribute towards the costs of bringing some of our Russian colleagues to
