Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

A position exists for a Research Assistant in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics to work in the field of high energy physics.

The successful applicant will join the ERC-funded PBSP team of Dr Maria Ubiali, whose goal is to quantitatively study the interplay between high-scale new physics effects and low-scale parametrization of the proton structure. The team will devise a new framework to constrain simultaneously the structure of the proton and new physics degrees of freedom in a model-independent way.

Duties include undertaking basic research from start to finish using straightforward mathematical modelling or scientific computation. This process will involve searches, contributing to the production of reports and publications, and analysing, interpreting and writing up your results. You will also need to be confident in presenting this information to steering groups and other bodies and forming relationships with internal and external contacts. You may also be asked to assist in the supervision of student projects or to provide class supervision/instruction.

The successful candidate will have excellent knowledge of theoretical particle physics with particular interest and skills in the global interpretation of LHC measurements using Effective Field Theories. The successful candidate will have a Masters' in Particle Physics Theory. Previous relevant research experience at this level is desirable but not essential.
