Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

The Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics is one of the largest and strongest of its kind in Europe; it enjoys a world-class reputation for both teaching and research, and is embedded in the School of Physical Sciences. An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and experienced professional services manager to join the Department's senior management team as Business and Operations Manager.

The Department currently hosts approximately 200 Academic, research and Professional Support Staff and around 150 PhD students at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, a purpose-built complex in Wilberforce Road, Cambridge.

This administrative leadership role is pivotal in the day-to-day operation of the Department and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to demonstrate their previous experience of strategic planning, supporting the Head of Department to identify and deliver departmental strategy and other key operational outcomes, whilst supporting the School in achieving its strategic aims and objectives in relation to governance, policy and business operations in support of teaching and research.

With significant previous experience of operational and strategic planning in a senior administrative role within Higher Education, or another complex setting, the successful candidate will lead, manage, and motivate the Department's professional services staff who deliver key support services in HR, finance, grants administration, teaching and examination support, buildings and facilities, communications, compliance and other operational areas. The HR, teaching and examinations and facilities functions operate as part of the Faculty of Mathematics shared services in liaison with our sister Department, Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics.

Utilising advanced communication and interpersonal skills, the successful candidate will not only build effective working relationships within their teams but will also develop and maintain effective working networks across the School of Physical Sciences and the University's central administration.

Educated to at least first-degree level, the ideal applicant will be able to engage with the values and aspirations of a teaching and research-intensive institution, and be able to manage both projects and operational tasks concurrently.
