Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

A post-doctoral Research Associate position in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics is available, in the research group of Prof. Hamza Fawzi. Funding for this position will come from Prof. Fawzi's UKRI Frontier/ERC Starting Grant titled 'Conic relaxations: scalable and accurate global optimization beyond polynomials'.

Applicants should have (or be close to completing) a PhD on, or related to, mathematical optimization. We welcome applications from candidates working on the theory or algorithms for convex optimization and/or applications of convex optimization to areas such as quantum information and theoretical physics, or otherwise. Excellent academic writing, as well as presentation and communication skills are essential. The ability to implement proof-of-concept algorithms using numerical software is also essential.

Duties include developing and conducting individual and collaborative research objectives, proposals and projects. The role holder will be expected to plan and manage their own research and administration, with guidance if required, and to assist, if needed, in the preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies. You must be able to communicate material of a technical nature and be able to build internal and external contacts. You may be asked to assist in the supervision of student projects, the development of student research skills, provide instruction or plan/deliver seminars relating to the research area.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.
