Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics to work on Modelling the Biophysics of sinus Infections with Professor Eric Lauga. The position is part of a UKRI-funded collaborative project to model experimentally and theoretically chronic rhinosinusitis (inflammation of the nose and paranasal sinuses) led by Co-PIs Teuta Pilizota (Edinburgh) and Eric Lauga (Cambridge). The project includes clinicians, physicists, biologists and applied mathematicians, across several departments in both Cambridge and Edinburgh. Specific work will include, but not be limited to, mathematical description of sinuses geometry, physical modelling of mucus clearance in sinuses, and biophysical modelling of sinus infections.

The successful applicant will hold a PhD in Applied Mathematics, Physics, or Biophysics. The ideal candidates will have extensive training in applied and computational mathematics, including theoretical and computational modelling for the continuum mechanics of biophysical systems and a strong track record of theoretical research at the intersection of mathematics and biological physics. Candidates should also have a strong taste for interdisciplinary research problems, in particular relating to bacteria and infectious diseases, and interest in close collaborations with experimentalists and clinicians.
