Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

Applications are invited for an Assistant/Associate Professorship in Experimental Applied Mathematics in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) and to commence on 1 September 2024 or shortly thereafter. Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent and be able to demonstrate an outstanding research track record using laboratory experimentation in tandem with mathematical and physical modelling.

Applications are particularly encouraged from those with an innovative and ambitious research agenda that can exploit the unique facilities of the GK Batchelor Laboratory in DAMTP, and which either opens up new and exciting areas of enquiry or complements and extends pre-existing strengths in DAMTP research with a significant experimental component. An ability to contribute substantially to teaching across the Mathematical Tripos is essential. Experience in encouraging and supporting applicants and students from groups underrepresented in STEM subjects, including women, will be an advantage.

Applicants will be expected to give undergraduate and masters-level lectures, solicit feedback from students and provide them with career or pastoral advice, and perform other departmental duties such as those associated with examinations. They will also be expected to investigate new areas of research, seeking out new funding opportunities and submit grant applications, particularly in support of the activities of the GK Batchelor Laboratory to ensure its long-term success. They will also be required to write papers for publication, attend conferences, network with national/international colleagues and give presentations.

Appointment will be made at an appropriate point on the scale for University Assistant or Associate Professors. Appointment as an Assistant Professor will normally be for a probationary period of five years with appointment to the retiring age thereafter, subject to satisfactory performance. Appointment as Associate Professor will typically require a demonstrable history of exceptional achievement.
