My research looks at molecular mixing and instability problems in miscible variable-density incompressible flows, particularly Rayleigh-Taylor instability. I have developed a novel experimental method which allows mixing to be visualised and quantified directly, and written a software package MOBILE to perform 3D numerical simulations of these flows on supercomputers. My PhD thesis evaluated a sequence of models for turbulent mixing ranging from simple scaling arguments to full numerical simulation with MOBILE, and examined the structure of instability driven mixing in contexts where the instability dynamics are constrained in some manner. I'm now a research fellow in DAMTP, clarifying numerically and experimentally an interesting discovery made during my PhD, and clearing a backlog of papers for publication. |
