Dr Stuart Dalziel
Career
- 2012-present Reader in Fluid Mechanics, Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics
- 2001-2012 University Senior Lecturer, Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics
- 1997-present Director of the GK Batchelor Laboratory
Research
Stuart is in charge of DAMTP's GK Batchelor Laboratory, in which physical experiments are undertaken to complement the Department's theoretical interests. A central focus of Stuart's work is therefore experimental, although he is also heavily involved in both numerical and theoretical studies.
Within the Laboratory, Stuart is motivated by the fluid dynamics of the environment in which we live, and how this affected by the earth's rotation and density variations, whether stabilising or destabilising.
Recent projects have included
- Scattering of internal gravity waves
- Internal wave attractors
- Rayleigh-Taylor instability in complex stratifications
- Interacting thermals
- Decay of rotating turbulence
- Stratified turbulence
- Resuspension by droplets
- Dispersion and interaction processes between sediments and organic chemicals
Stuart also has significant interests in image processing as a technique for extracting high-resolution quantitative information from fluid flows and is author of DigiFlow, a system designed for this purpose.
