LecturingIn Michaelmas 2009 I gave 9 lectures for Slow Viscous Flows (a course in Part III of the Mathematical Tripos). If you are interested in the fluid mechanics films created by Shapiro and others, you should click here. The film entitled 'Low Reynolds number flow' is of particular relevance for the course. SupervisingIn Lent 2010 I am supervising students for Fluid Mechanics in Part IB of the Mathematical Tripos. This page is intended as a (hopefully) useful resource for my supervisees. Administrative IssuesPlease hand work in to the Plodge at Great Gate, by 6pm the evening before a supervision (generally Sunday evenings). I make no guarantees to mark work handed in after this deadline and do not (on principle) mark work during supervisions, since that disadvantages your partner. Supervisions will take place in my office in the CMS, i.e. H1.01. The agreed times for Fluid Dynamics supervisions are Mondays, starting on the 8th February:
For each supervision you should do all of the questions on the corresponding sheet (e.g. Sheet 1 for Supervision 1). You can download the examples sheets from here Some thoughts on getting the most out of supervisionsPrior to a supervisionIn the event of you not being able to make a supervision, please try to swap with another pair and then let me know (via e-mail) what arrangement you have come to. If this is impossible and you have a genuine reason for needing a different time, please let me know and I will do my best to accommodate you. Complete as much of each example sheet as possible. If you are unable to do a particular question, then try to write down how you think one should approach the question, giving details where possible - that way I have a better chance of being able to help you! Also, remember that questions on the sheets are quite unrelated: not being able to do question 3 does not mean that you'll be unable to do all later questions! Try to meet with your supervision partner to discuss any points that you would like me to go through in the supervision. If you can make a list of these points as a pair or individually that would be very helpful for me. During a supervisionPlease be punctual and ensure that mobiles are turned off during supervisions. Ask me questions. I am more than happy to try and rephrase something that you don't understand in terms that you can. If you have no questions for me, I may start asking you some! After a supervisionWrite up your supervision notes (or the notes that I made during the supervision) as soon as possible after the event. In Easter term, you will be busy enough without having to recall the things that I said in a supervision two terms ago!
