Faculty of Mathematics Fortran Course

The course focuses on what are in my eyes the essential aspects one must grasp to understand and write in the Language, finishing with a full Program walk through. No previous experience is needed. The course mainly deals with the 77 Standard, but visits those aspects of Fortran 90 most likely to be encountered in and of most value to scientific and mathematical programming.

The course comprises 6 one Hour Lectures. The first 2 cover data representation and basic flow control constructs, aimed at entry level Fortran programmers. Then Array handling, Files and I/O and Program Units, are visited, and a full Program is walked through in the last session. A one hour seminar on High Performance (HPC) programming will follow the course, open to anyone interested.

Printed copies are provided of all overheads, but people may wish to take additional notes as demonstrations and extra explanations will be written on blackboards or flip charts. While classes will last about an hour, they will retain use of the room for an eventual half hour of questions afterwards.

As the initial 2 sessions remain quite basic, for those already familiar with the language, only the Arrays, I/O, Program Units, and walk through Lectures, or just the last two would be worth coming, unless a refresher is wanted anyway. Each session after the first begins with a quick recap, so those missing any session can still join or continue the course and are welcome to do so.
