The Symposium

Refer to www.hawking.org.uk A 60th Birthday Symposium celebrating Professor Stephen Hawking's contributions to fundamental physics and cosmology was held on Friday, 11th January 2002 at the new Centre for Mathematical Sciences in west Cambridge. The Symposium featured a full day of popular lectures from distinguished scientists, including Sir Martin Rees, Professor James Hartle, Professor Kip Thorne and Sir Roger Penrose. The final speaker on the day was Professor Stephen Hawking himself.

Conference Reports

Scientific workshop

Preceding the symposium on the 7-10th January 2002, a technical scientific workshop was held also entitled, `The Future of Theoretical Physics and Cosmology'. Further information about it can be found at the conference website, and this now includes Realplayer video and OHP slides from all the technical talks.

Local Organising Committee

The local organising committee for the meeting is Professor Gary Gibbons, Dr Stuart Rankin and Dr Paul Shellard. They are currently editing a proceedings for the meeting, which includes both popular and scientific talks to be published shortly by Cambridge University Press. For the organisation of the meeting they were ably assisted by the conference secretary, Jennifer Formichelli, and Janet Bett.
