Network setup for Apple OSX (10.2)

This document tries to explain how to configure a machine running Apple OSX to be usable on our Laptop Network.

In this description we are assuming that you are configuring the Built-in Ethernet, for other network interfaces you should simply have to select the right network device from the list in System preferences.

Network config for Built-in Ethernet

Start up the System Preferences select Network and switch to the TCP/IP pane.

If you are not running as an admin user (or have locked the preferences against accidental changes), this will cause a pop up window to prompt for an admin user/password.

Type in the details and click on the OK button.

In the TCP/IP pane select Built-in Ethernet then move down and change the Configure list to select Using DHCP.

Ensure that the DNS Servers and Search Domains boxes are empty.

Ensure that none of the other proxy boxes are checked (especially the FTP Proxy.

You can have the Use Passive FTP... box checked or not as you prefer.

In the Bypass proxy setting for... box enter the string *.cam.ac.uk.

Once you have entered all the data, hit the Apply Now button and close the System preferences window.

Other configs

This setup has been tested on Apple OSX 10.2 but the configuration seems to be very similar for 10.1.
