Network setup for Apple OSX (10.3/10.4)

This document tries to explain how to configure a machine running Apple OSX 10.3/10.4 to be usable on our Laptop Network.

In this description we are assuming that you are configuring the Built-in Ethernet, for other network interfaces you should simply have to select the right network device from the list in System preferences.

Network config

Start up the System Preferences select Network.

If you are not logged in as an admin user (or have locked the preferences against accidental changes), then attempting to make any changes will cause a pop up window to prompt for an admin user/password.

Type in the details and click on the OK button.

From the Location pull down pick New Location....

Type in a name for a location e.g. CMS and click on the OK button.

In the Show pull down list select Built-in Ethernet then select the TCP/IP pane.

In the Configure IPv4 list select Using DHCP.

Ensure that the DNS Servers and Search Domains boxes are empty.

Then select the Proxies pane and check the Automatic Proxy Configuration box, and enter the URL:

http://laps.maths.cam.ac.uk/proxyconfig.pac

Ensure that none of the other proxy boxes are checked (especially the FTP Proxy.

You can have the Use Passive FTP... box checked or not as you prefer.

Leave the Bypass proxy setting for... box blank (we provide the config from the server).

Once you have entered all the data, hit the Apply Now button and close the System preferences window.

Other configs

This setup has been tested on Apple OSX 10.3 and 10.4 and should apply to Safari and IE or in fact any other web browser which uses the Apple standard interface -- browsers like Mozilla or FireFox probably still need their own config.
