21st Century Skills
Notes by Ben Gibbs
The idea that there is a set of skills required for successful living in the
21st century has been about for a while, but it is only in the last 18
months or so that anyone has identified these clearly and in a way that
enables schools and others to implement them in their curriculum.
Tony Wagner's 7 survival skills are about as
clear as it gets, and have been formed from his (Harvard-based) research
into the needs of some of the US's largest employers (see
here in particular).
The Partnership for 21st Century Skills has taken
this a stage further and looked at how these skills might be developed into
a new curricular framework for schools (see
here in particular).
Cisco's
21st Century Schools Initiative is a powerful (and very well funded)
outfit that focuses on how schools can use technology to enhance the
learning of 21C skills. They've gone quite far. See
this in particular. Also note that it's supported by the OECD and
forms a part of the work of the
Innovation Unit in its
Global Education Leaders Programme
