Biographical Sketch

I have been a Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge since 2003. I am chairman of the management committee of the Cambridge Computational Biology Institute and Director of its MPhil in Computational Biology. Our research focusses on stochastic computation (MCMC without likelihoods, approximate Bayesian computation), population genetics (inference for coalescent processes, association studies) and statistical inference in the fossil record. I am also chairman of the management committee of the Physics of Medicine Initiative. In 2009 I was elected to the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci).

I am Professor of Cancer Research (Bioinformatics) in the Department of Oncology and Senior Group Leader in the new Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute (CRI). There our research focusses on cancer genomics (primarily statistical analysis of microarray and resequencing technologies to study expression, aCGH, methylation, microRNAs) with a particular emphasis on analysis of Illumina platforms. A second theme is evolutionary approaches to cancer, in particular the development of cellular Potts models for the evolution of colon crypts and tumours. We have developed a high-throughput method for identifying methylation status in single molecules that we use to study tumour evolution. We have ongoing collaborations with the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. Further details of our research at the CRI may be found here.

I am an associate editor of Annals of Applied Statistics, Annals of Human Genetics, Journal of Computational Biology and Statistics Surveys, on the Editorial Board of CaPR (Cancer Prevention Research), MathematicS In Action, Human Genomics, and Evolutionary Bioinformatics Online. and past Associate Editor or Editorial Board member for 11 other journals in probability, statistics and biology.

I have a long-standing connection with the Program in Molecular and Computational Biology at the University of Southern California, where I am a Research Professor and hold the George and Louise Kawamoto Chair in Biological Sciences. Further information may be found here.

I am on Advisory Boards of a number of other Institutes and Consortia:
