About

We invite PhD students from around the UK to come and advertise PhD opportunities in mathematics (and related fields) at their respective universities to our Part III Mathematics students. Last year's event saw representatives from Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Durham, Edinburgh, Exeter, Imperial, Leeds, Liverpool, LSE, LSGNT, Manchester, Newcastle, The Open University, Oxford, Queen Mary, Southampton, Swansea, UCL and Warwick, and we are hoping to make 2022 equally successful!

Lightning Presentation

The afternoon starts with a 3-minute presentation from each university in our main lecture theatre (with at most one pdf/powerpoint slide) to talk about why their university is a great place to do a PhD.

Question Time

The main focus of the event is the question session that follows, which takes place in our cafeteria over coffee, tea and biscuits. Each institution's team is assigned a table where Part III students can have an informal chat and get answers to questions.

Dinner Discussion

After the event, we will treat your team to dinner, if they are available.

Universities: How to Join

Whom to send

Each university is welcome to send up to three PhD student representatives spread between pure, applied, statistics and theoretical physics. If you have reason to send an extra student, e.g. representing a CDT shared between multiple universities, please get in touch and we will try to accommodate you.

Your representatives would ideally, but not necessarily,

  • have been at your department for long enough to be acquainted with most of the research groups there,
  • be former Part III students, so that they are familiar with the situation our students are in,
  • expect to be around next year to welcome any newcomers from Part III.

Let us know if you can participate

Please let us know as soon as possible whether

  • you expect to be sending us students,
  • you do not expect to be sending students this year but might wish to do so in future years, or
  • you and your institution do not wish to be contacted again.

Once you have selected the students who will be attending, please email us their name and email address, and have each student fill out the form below by Wednesday 26th October:

Want to participate but cannot visit?

Whether or not you plan to send students, we would be grateful if you could send us links to your

  • webpages,
  • postgraduate prospectus,
  • open day presentations,
  • or any other information you consider relevant to prospective graduate students in the mathematical sciences

We will collate the information on a webpage made available to the Part III students before the event.

Unfortunately, we are not able to help with accommodation or travel expenses in general. Since accommodation in Cambridge is expensive and sparse, if your students cannot make use of their former college connection to obtain a room, then we recommend that you book accommodation as soon as possible (potentially even before you have found a student!).

Speaker schedule for the day

Wednesday 2nd November 2022, Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Cambridge

Once you have been selected by your university to attend, please enter your details in the speaker sign-up form.

  • 3 pm–4 pm (to be confirmed)

    Arrival and set-up

See the CMS website for how to get here.

Enter through the east gatehouse and go across the courtyard into the main building. The central core is behind the spiral stairs. MR2 is down the stairs and then behind you.

We'll be in the central core to meet you as you arrive and show you to your tables. There's a café selling snacks and sandwiches in case you arrive early or hungry.

  • 4 pm–5 pm (to be confirmed)

    Presentations, MR2

You have up to 3 minutes per university on stage in our main lecture theatre to say why your university is a great place for doing a PhD. Please coordinate with any other presenters from your university to decide whether to present together, one person alone, or one after the other — as long as you stay within the 3 minutes total.

You can put up a single slide on the projector; we recommend that this includes a list of the maths-related research areas at your university. Please email it to us by Monday 31st October (in PDF or PPT format), so that we can set it up beforehand.

We will record the presentations and make the videos and slides available to the Part III students. You can opt out of this via the sign-up form beforehand or by emailing us after the presentations.

  • 5 pm–6 pm (to be confirmed)

    Questions, Central Core

Each university will have a 1m×1m table where the Part III students can find you and ask questions.

E.g. How do I apply? How many PhD students do research in area X? Do you have many seminars in topic Y? What is supervisor Z like to work with? Do the PhD students usually collaborate or each do their own thing? What is there to do in your spare time in town W?

Coffee, tea and biscuits will be available.

If you want to put up a poster, let us know and we'll make sure there's a poster board to pin it to.

If the Part III students run out of questions then we'll pack up and head to dinner early.

  • 6–8pm (to be confirmed)

    Dinner

We will go out for a casual dinner at a restaurant courtesy of DPMMS/DAMTP, if you can make it!
