Postgraduate Study in Mathematics

Various postgraduate courses of a mathematical nature are available at the University of Cambridge, including both taught courses and research degrees.

Master of Advanced Study (MASt) / Master of Mathematics (MMath) / Part III
This course, commonly referred to as Part III, is a one-year taught course in mathematics. It is an excellent preparation for mathematical research and it is also a valuable course in mathematics and in its applications for those who want further training before taking posts in industry, research establishments or teaching. Students attend lectures and take written exams at the end of the course. There is also an option to submit an 'essay' on a topic of current interest.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
One-year taught courses focussing on different areas of mathematics and related disciplines are offered by various departments and institutes within the University.

Research Degrees: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
Both DAMTP and DPMMS offer a three year PhD in which students conduct original research in mathematics, before submitting a single thesis and taking an oral examination. In collaboration, the Department's also offer a PhD in Mathematics of Information; a four year PhD course with a structured first year.

Both DAMTP and DPMMS offer a twelve-month MPhil research programme which involves minimal formal teaching: students are integrated into the research culture of the Department of Pure Mathematics & Mathematical Statistics (DPMMS), or the Department of Applied Mathematics & Theoretical Physics (DAMTP).
