Assistant Professor in Climate and Environmental Fluid Dynamics

My group’s research investigates the fundamental physics governing climate and environmental systems. We largely focus on ice-ocean interactions in Earth’s polar regions and on the Solar System’s ice-covered moons. We utilize theoretical, observational, and sometimes experimental methods. For example, we think about how ocean density structure influences heat transport and ice melt. Such processes can impact both polar climate and global climate change.  We also think about how to infer ocean dynamics on icy satellites where space measurements cannot directly observe below ice. In the frozen worlds beyond our planet, such ice-ocean physics may give insight into the dynamics and habitability of planetary systems. Finally, we are also interested in fluid-dynamics problems involving sustainability, such as building ventilation and indoor mixing, and analogous concepts in oceanography.
