Research interests: Our research spans focuses on the fluid dynamics of the earth in a host of geophysical settings. The work couples thermodynamics and fluid dynamics in multiphase systems using analytical, numerical and experimental techniques. Recent research efforts have focused on the fluid dynamics of geological carbon sequestration through experiments and models of propagation and leakage, and in the efficacy of secondary trapping mechanisms such as dissolution-driven convection and the large-scale implications of capillary forces at small scales. In addition, ongoing work is focused on the solidification of binary solutions as found in the polar oceans when salt water freezes, in Earth's core as preserved in the seismic signature, in the solidification of magmatic sills, and in the form of icicles. Recent work examines the coupling of fluid flow and elastic flexure in settings as diverse as sea ice, laccoliths and the Tibetan plateau.
