Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

A position exists for a Post Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics to work with the Ocean Dynamics group (https://www.damtp.cam.ac.uk/user/jrt51/).

The post is part of a broader project GReenland ice sheet to Atlantic tipping points from Ice-sheet Loss (GRAIL). GRAIL is a large international collaboration across 14 institutions, led by the British Antarctic Survey to observe and model the melting and calving of glaciers in Greenland fjords. The PDRA in DAMTP will conduct large-eddy simulations (LES) that capture turbulence near the glacier face, and will couple the LES with a fjord-scale model.

Duties of the post will include designing, testing, running, and analysing large-eddy simulations and working closely with the rest of the project to closely integrate the results with observations and other model results.

The role holder will be expected to plan and manage their own research and administration, with guidance if required, and to assist in the preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies. You must be able to communicate material of a technical nature and be able to build internal and external contacts. You may be asked to assist in the supervision of student projects, the development of student research skills, provide instruction or plan/deliver seminars relating to the research area.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Oceanography, Physics, or a related field and experience in ocean modelling. Experience using the MITgcm or Oceananigans models is highly desirable.
